Who needs what: a guide to Premier League clubs in the transfer window

ARSENAL
Targets Nicolas Pépé (Lille), Gary Cahill (Chelsea)
Could leave Aaron Ramsey, Carl Jenkinson, Mesut Özil
Tony Cascarino on what they need To be frank, the whole back line. It’s a question of which emergency position they want to buy first. Perhaps a centre half should be the priority.
BOURNEMOUTH
Targets Danny Drinkwater (Chelsea), Chris Mepham (Brentford), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Callum McGregor (Celtic)
Could leave Jermain Defoe
Cascarino They have been hit badly by injuries and could probably do with two or three defenders to help them cope. Losing Simon Francis for the season is a huge blow.
BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION
Targets Dominic Solanke (Liverpool), Reece James (Chelsea; on loan at Wigan)
Could leave Ben White (on loan), Ezequiel Schelotto, Markus Suttner
Cascarino Would they consider looking for a younger version of Glenn Murray as back-up? Chris Hughton does like someone who can lead the line and, if anything happens to Murray, they would struggle.
BURNLEY
Targets Jay Rodriguez (West Brom)
Could leave Dwight McNeil (loan), Matej Vydra, Nahki Wells (on loan at QPR, could become permanent)
Cascarino Robbie Brady has been injured far too much and they miss his dead-ball delivery when he is not there.
CARDIFF CITY
Targets Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Emiliano Sala (Nantes)
Could leave Loïc Damour, Matthew Connolly and Lee Tomlin (loan to Peterborough)
Cascarino What do you take to a club who are all punching above their weight? You don’t want to upset the apple cart or think they are doing them a favour by going there. If they bring in anyone they need to buy into the mentality.
CHELSEA
Targets Gonzalo Higuaín (Juventus; on loan at Milan), Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund), Nabil Fekir (Lyons)
Could leave Gary Cahill (free), Cesc Fàbregas, Victor Moses, Danny Drinkwater, Davide Zappacosta
Cascarino The obvious position is a new centre forward, but Willian’s position on the right is up for grabs. He is 30 and they need to consider a younger element in their team.
CRYSTAL PALACE
Targets Dominic Solanke (Liverpool, on loan)
Could leave Scott Dann, Christian Benteke
Cascarino They are screaming out for a centre forward. No one has a clue when Christian Benteke will be back and Connor Wickham, who was out for so long, is not really fit yet. Anyone to help Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha.
EVERTON
Targets None
Could leave Oumar Niasse, James McCarthy, Kieran Dowell (on loan to Sheff Utd), Mason Holgate (on loan to West Brom), Phil Jagielka
Cascarino Séamus Coleman has not been the same player since he broke his leg so perhaps a right back to offer an alternative.
FULHAM
Targets Gary Cahill, Danny Drinkwater (both Chelsea)
Could leave Fabri
Cascarino They need so much more defensively, particularly at centre half. None of their players in that position, such as Alfie Mawson, have pulled up trees.
HUDDERSFIELD TOWN
Targets Jaden Brown (Tottenham, on loan), Dominic Solanke (Liverpool, on loan), Neal Maupay (Brentford)
Could leave Collin Quaner, Abdelhamid Sabiri, Ramadan Sobhi (loan to Al Ahly)
Cascarino They have got 12 goals in 20 games so you would d say they need a striker, but what’s the point if they get no service?
LEICESTER CITY
Targets Shoya Nakajima (Portimonense)
Could leave Eldin Jakupovic, Yohan Benalouane, Andy King, Adrien Silva, Fousseni Diabaté
Cascarino Another forward. I don’t think Kelechi Iheanacho has really stepped up. Jamie Vardy is 32 next week and they need an alternative with pace who James Maddison can play in behind at No 10.
LIVERPOOL
Targets Tanguy Ndombele (Lyons)
Could leave Nathaniel Clyne, Divock Origi, Dominic Solanke
Cascarino Nothing doing. They covered all their positions last summer and have depth in all areas.
MANCHESTER CITY
Targets None
Could leave Eliaquim Mangala (Galatasaray), Brahim Díaz (Real Madrid)
Cascarino They could do with a defensive midfielder to provide cover for Fernandinho. I suspect they won’t but I’d go for another centre forward. Not convinced Gabriel Jesus can quite cut it yet if Sergio Agüero is injured.
MANCHESTER UNITED
Targets None
Could leave None
Cascarino They miss an unbelievably creative midfielder. They have not got the equivalent of a David Silva at Manchester City — someone who is so capable of keeping the ball and dribbling past someone. And like most teams, a new centre half would be handy.
NEWCASTLE UNITED
Targets Miguel Almirón (Atlanta United), Maxime Poundjé (Bordeaux)
Could leave Rob Elliot
Cascarino A creative midfielder because Jonjo Shelvey is out of the side. They need someone who is going to be a passer — a player who can keep the ball and pass the ball and also be a bit nasty in there.
SOUTHAMPTON
Targets Dominic Solanke (Liverpool, on loan), Pascal Gross (Brighton)
Could leave Manolo Gabbiadini, Steven Davis
Cascarino I would want someone with a bit of experience in defence to help them at centre half.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
Targets Tanguy Ndombele (Lyons), Nicolas Pépé (Lille)
Could leave Mousa Dembélé, Vincent Janssen, Victor Wanyama, Georges-Kévin Nkoudou
Cascarino Most definitely a centre half. I don’t think Toby Alderweireld is the defender he was, so they could do with more depth there.
WATFORD
Targets Adrien Tameze (Nice), Szymon Zurkowski (Gornik Zabrze)
Could leave Miguel Britos, Marvin Zeegelaar, Stefano Okaka
Cascarino They don’t need much, perhaps a right-sided midfielder. Roberto Pereyra has come in on the left for Richarlison but they need someone on the right who can get goals to balance it up.
WEST HAM UNITED
Targets None
Could leave Andy Carroll, Reece Oxford
Cascarino Having announced the signing of Samir Nasri on a six-month deal yesterday, unless they find someone who they can see being a starter, I don’t think they will do too much. They just need to keep people fit.
WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS
Targets Shoya Nakajima (Portimonense)
Could leave Kortney Hause, Ethan Ebanks-Landell
Cascarino They are fairly well covered in all areas of the pitch, the key this month is just not to sell anyone.
